ZINC OXIDE

zinc oxide tlenek cynku оксид цинка

Zinc oxide is a synthetic inorganic white pigment produced in an intermediate (French) process in muffle furnaces.

Zinc oxide is an odourless solid with a white color, occuring in powder or granular form. Sole crystals are transparent. The product is hardly soluble in water and has amphoteric properties.

There are many commercially available variants of zinc oxide, which differ with regards to raw material purity used for production – a metallic zinc ore. French-made grades offered by Polsaros Sp. z o.o. are characterized with degrees of purity as follows (ZnO content expressed in %wt.):

ZINC OXIDE – APPLICATIONS

Tire & rubber industries – ZnO together with stearic acid acts as an activator of the vulcanization process. In addition, it improves resistance to temperature and abrasion and protects against UV degradation. In the rubber compound, the zinc oxide content is expressed as the amount per 100 parts of rubber, i.e. 100 phr (parts per hundred of rubber). Usually it is 3-5 phr. Basically all rubber products contain zinc oxide.

Ceramics and glass industries – ZnO is a standard component of ceramic enamels, e.g. glaze or as a part of ceramic frit composition of which the enamel is made. The substance possesses two important properties – it reduces the melting point of the enamel, thereby reducing energy and equipment requirements. It also allows one to emphasize the color depth of other pigments. Zinc oxide is present in heat-resistant glass, in cooking clothes as well as in specific applications such as photochromic lenses.

Chemical industry – ZnO is used wherever zinc is required as a source metal.

Cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries – ZnO has got a slight antibacterial effect and acceleration of wound healing. For this reason, it is used as an ingredient in ointments and powders to treat various skin diseases. It is also used in dentistry to perform temporary restorations.

In addition, it is used in the agricultural industry (Zinc Oxide Feed Grade), paints and varnishes, adhesives and plastics.
